Least fixed point

Builds on Partial orderLeast element

Definition

Let (P,≤)(P, \le) be a partially ordered set and let f ⁣:P→Pf \colon P \to P be a map. A fixed point of ff is an element x∈Px \in P with f(x)=xf(x) = x. A least fixed point of ff is a fixed point xx of ff such that x≤yx \le y for every fixed point yy of ff. In other words, it is the least element of the set {x∈P:f(x)=x}\set{x \in P : f(x) = x}.

Remarks

A least fixed point is unique when it exists, by antisymmetry of ≤\le. It is written lfp⁡(f)\operatorname{lfp}(f) or μf\mu f. The greatest fixed point is defined dually and written gfp⁡(f)\operatorname{gfp}(f) or νf\nu f. Example: for f ⁣:ℝ→ℝf \colon \R \to \R, f(x)=x2f(x) = x^2, the fixed points are the solutions of x2=xx^2 = x, namely 00 and 11. Since 0≤10 \le 1, the least fixed point is 00. Non-example: for g ⁣:ℝ→ℝg \colon \R \to \R, g(x)=xg(x) = x, every real number is a fixed point, and ℝ\R has no least element, so gg has no least fixed point. The map x↦x+1x \mapsto x + 1 on ℝ\R has no fixed point at all.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
