Left ideal
Definition
Let be a ring. A left ideal of is a subset such that:
- is a subgroup of the additive group .
- for all and .
Remarks
A right ideal is defined in the same way with in clause 2. A two-sided ideal is a subset that is both a left and a right ideal. Example: let be a field and let be the set of matrices whose second column is zero. It is an additive subgroup, and for and the second column of is times the second column of , which is zero. So is a left ideal. Non-example: the set of matrices whose second row is zero is an additive subgroup, but , where is the matrix with in position and elsewhere. So clause 2 fails for ; it is a right ideal instead. The left ideals of are the submodules of as a left module over itself. For each , the set is the left ideal generated by .
