Definition

Let ϖ=2∫01dt/1−t4\varpi = 2\int_0^1 dt/\sqrt{1 - t^4} be the lemniscate constant. The map x↦∫0xdt/1−t4x \mapsto \int_0^x dt/\sqrt{1 - t^4} is a strictly increasing bijection from [−1,1][-1, 1] onto [−ϖ/2,ϖ/2][-\varpi/2, \varpi/2]. The lemniscate sine sl⁡\operatorname{sl} is the inverse map on [−ϖ/2,ϖ/2][-\varpi/2, \varpi/2], extended to ℝ\R by sl⁡(x+ϖ)=−sl⁡(x)\operatorname{sl}(x + \varpi) = -\operatorname{sl}(x). It extends further to a meromorphic function on ℂ\C by analytic continuation. The lemniscate cosine is cl⁡(z)=sl⁡(ϖ/2−z)\operatorname{cl}(z) = \operatorname{sl}(\varpi/2 - z).

Remarks

The function sl⁡\operatorname{sl} is odd, satisfies sl⁡(0)=0\operatorname{sl}(0) = 0, sl⁡(ϖ/2)=1\operatorname{sl}(\varpi/2) = 1, and (sl⁡′)2=1−sl⁡4(\operatorname{sl}')^2 = 1 - \operatorname{sl}^4. It is an elliptic function whose periods form the lattice spanned by (1+i)ϖ(1 + i)\varpi and (1−i)ϖ(1 - i)\varpi; in particular 2ϖ2\varpi and 2iϖ2i\varpi are periods. It satisfies sl⁡(iz)=isl⁡(z)\operatorname{sl}(iz) = i\operatorname{sl}(z). The two functions are linked by sl⁡2+cl⁡2+sl⁡2cl⁡2=1\operatorname{sl}^2 + \operatorname{cl}^2 + \operatorname{sl}^2\operatorname{cl}^2 = 1. Example: at z=ϖ/2z = \varpi/2 one has sl⁡=1\operatorname{sl} = 1 and cl⁡=sl⁡(0)=0\operatorname{cl} = \operatorname{sl}(0) = 0, and indeed 1+0+0=11 + 0 + 0 = 1. Non-example: the inverse of ∫0xdt/1−t2\int_0^x dt/\sqrt{1 - t^2} is sin⁡\sin, which is not the lemniscate sine: it has the single period 2π2\pi and satisfies (sin⁡′)2=1−sin⁡2(\sin')^2 = 1 - \sin^2 instead of 1−sl⁡41 - \operatorname{sl}^4. In terms of the Jacobi elliptic functions, sl⁡(z)=sn⁡(z;k)\operatorname{sl}(z) = \operatorname{sn}(z; k) with k2=−1k^2 = -1, since this sn⁡\operatorname{sn} solves the same equation (y′)2=(1−y2)(1+y2)(y')^2 = (1 - y^2)(1 + y^2) with y(0)=0y(0) = 0, y′(0)=1y'(0) = 1.
