Definition

Let f ⁣:ℝn→(−∞,+∞]f \colon \R^n \to (-\infty, +\infty] be a function with values in the extended real line, and let xˉ∈ℝn\bar x \in \R^n with f(xˉ)f(\bar x) finite.

  1. A vector v∈ℝnv \in \R^n is a regular subgradient of ff at a point xx with f(x)f(x) finite if lim inf⁡y→x, y≠xf(y)−f(x)−⟨v,y−x⟩∣y−x∣≥0,\liminf_{y \to x, \ y \ne x} \frac{f(y) - f(x) - \ip{v}{y - x}}{\abs{y - x}} \ge 0, where lim inf⁡\liminf is the limit inferior. The set of these vectors is the regular subdifferential ∂^f(x)\hat\partial f(x).
  2. The limiting subdifferential ∂f(xˉ)\partial f(\bar x) is the set of vectors v∈ℝnv \in \R^n for which there are sequences xk→xˉx_k \to \bar x and vk→vv_k \to v with f(xk)→f(xˉ)f(x_k) \to f(\bar x) and vk∈∂^f(xk)v_k \in \hat\partial f(x_k) for all kk.

Remarks

Taking xk=xˉx_k = \bar x and vk=vv_k = v shows that ∂^f(xˉ)⊆∂f(xˉ)\hat\partial f(\bar x) \subseteq \partial f(\bar x). If ff is differentiable near xˉ\bar x with continuous gradient, then ∂f(xˉ)={∇f(xˉ)}\partial f(\bar x) = \set{\nabla f(\bar x)}. If ff is convex, both sets equal the subdifferential of convex analysis. If xˉ\bar x is a local minimum of ff, then 0∈∂^f(xˉ)⊆∂f(xˉ)0 \in \hat\partial f(\bar x) \subseteq \partial f(\bar x). Other names are the Mordukhovich subdifferential and the basic subdifferential.

Example: f(x)=−∣x∣f(x) = -\abs{x} on ℝ\R and xˉ=0\bar x = 0. For x>0x > 0 the function is differentiable with derivative −1-1, so ∂^f(x)={−1}\hat\partial f(x) = \set{-1}; for x<0x < 0, ∂^f(x)={1}\hat\partial f(x) = \set{1}. Hence {−1,1}⊆∂f(0)\set{-1, 1} \subseteq \partial f(0), and in fact ∂f(0)={−1,1}\partial f(0) = \set{-1, 1}.

Non-example: the vector v=0v = 0 for the same function. It is not a regular subgradient at 00, since (f(y)−f(0)−0)/∣y∣=−1(f(y) - f(0) - 0)/\abs{y} = -1 for all y≠0y \ne 0. It is not a limit of regular subgradients at nearby points either, since these are all ±1\pm 1. So 0∉∂f(0)0 \notin \partial f(0), although 00 lies in the Clarke generalized gradient [−1,1][-1, 1].
