Definition
Let be the number of classes. For let be prior probabilities with , and let be class means. Let be a positive definite matrix, the common covariance matrix. The linear discriminant functions are Linear discriminant analysis assigns to a class for which is largest. In practice the parameters are estimated from a labelled training sample. One uses the class proportions for , the class sample means for and the pooled sample covariance matrix for .
Remarks
If the class has the distribution and prior probability , this rule is the Bayes rule. Indeed, differs from by a term that does not depend on , where is the density of class . Each is affine in , so the boundary between two classes is a hyperplane. For two classes, goes to class when Example: with , , , and , the condition is , so goes to class when . Non-example: if the normal classes have different covariance matrices , the Bayes rule has quadratic boundaries. This rule is quadratic discriminant analysis, not a linear rule.
