Linear integral equation
Builds on Integral equationKernel of an integral equationContinuous function
Definition
Let , let be given functions, let be a given kernel, and let . For each , let be either or . A linear integral equation for the unknown function is an integral equation of the form
Remarks
Example: is linear, with , , and .
Non-example: is not linear, because enters through . If solves it, then does not solve the equation with replaced by .
The equation is of the first kind when and of the second kind when . It is of the third kind when is a continuous function that vanishes somewhere but not everywhere. If has no zeros, dividing by gives an equation of the second kind. In operator notation the equation reads , where also denotes the integral operator.
