Linear recurrence with polynomial coefficients
Builds on Recurrence relationPolynomial ring
Definition
Let be a field and let be an integer. Let be polynomials in the polynomial ring over , with . The linear recurrence with polynomial coefficients is the recurrence relation for a sequence . Its order is , when .
Remarks
Example: the Catalan numbers satisfy . Check for : and , with and . Non-example: fails the definition, since the coefficient is not a polynomial in . When all are constant, the recurrence has constant coefficients. If has a root , the equation for does not determine , so the initial values may not fix the solution. Other names are P-recursive or holonomic recurrence; an inhomogeneous version allows a polynomial right side.
