Definition
Let . Let be a known real matrix, the design matrix, whose -th row holds the explanatory variables of unit . The linear regression model for a response vector is where:
- is an unknown vector of coefficients;
- is a random error vector with mean ;
- the errors are uncorrelated with a common unknown variance , that is, .
Usually is assumed to have full column rank , and often the errors are assumed normal.
Remarks
Example: simple linear regression is the case with rows . The model is also a linear regression, with rows , because it is linear in . Non-example: is not linear in , so it is a nonlinear regression model. The conditions 2 and 3 are the Gauss–Markov conditions; when they hold and has full column rank, ordinary least squares is the best linear unbiased estimator of . Weaker forms allow correlated or heteroscedastic errors, which leads to generalised least squares.
