Definition
Let be a complex analytic set in an open subset of and let . For , let be the sphere of radius centred at , and let . There is such that, for , the spaces and are homeomorphic. The link of at is for any such , defined up to homeomorphism.
Remarks
For small, , where is the closed ball, is homeomorphic to the cone over with vertex ; this is the conic structure theorem. If is smooth at of complex dimension , the link is a sphere . If with an isolated singularity at , the link is a smooth closed manifold of dimension , and Milnor showed that it is -connected.
Example: at . The map is a bijection from onto . On the sphere , the points of are with fixed, which trace the torus knot of type , the trefoil.
Non-example of the condition on : at . For , consists of the two circles cut out by and , a Hopf link. For , the line also meets in a third circle, so this sphere is too large to give the link.
