Liouville property of graphs
Definition
Let be a connected infinite graph in which every vertex has finitely many neighbours, with symmetric positive edge weights . The graph has the Liouville property if every bounded function that is harmonic on all of is constant. It has the strong Liouville property if every positive function that is harmonic on all of is constant. Without weights, the edge weights are taken equal to , which corresponds to the simple random walk.
Remarks
Example: with unit weights has the Liouville property for every . For this is direct, since the harmonic functions on are , and such a function is bounded only when . Non-example: the -regular tree fails it. Fix an edge , and let be the probability that the simple random walk from eventually stays in the component of minus this edge that contains . The walk on is transient, so it crosses the edge finitely often, and is harmonic by conditioning on the first step. Its values lie in , and it is not constant. Indeed tends to as moves away from the edge on the side of , and to on the side of . The strong Liouville property implies the Liouville property, since a bounded harmonic gives the positive harmonic function .
