Lippmann–Schwinger equation

Example

Consider the stationary Schrödinger equation −Δψ+Vψ=k2ψ-\Delta \psi + V \psi = k^2 \psi on ℝ3\R^3, with a real potential VV of compact support, in units with ℏ2/2m=1\hbar^2 / 2m = 1. Let k>0k > 0 and let 𝐤∈ℝ3\mathbf{k} \in \R^3 with ∣𝐤∣=k\abs{\mathbf{k}} = k be the direction and wavenumber of an incoming plane wave. The scattering solution ψ\psi solves the Lippmann–Schwinger equation ψ(x)=ei𝐤⋅x−14π∫ℝ3eik∣x−y∣∣x−y∣ V(y) ψ(y) dy,x∈ℝ3.\psi(x) = e^{i \mathbf{k} \cdot x} - \frac{1}{4\pi} \int_{\R^3} \frac{e^{ik\abs{x - y}}}{\abs{x - y}} \, V(y) \, \psi(y) \, dy, \quad x \in \R^3. It is an integral equation of the second kind for ψ\psi, with the weakly singular kernel −14πeik∣x−y∣∣x−y∣V(y)-\frac{1}{4\pi} \frac{e^{ik\abs{x - y}}}{\abs{x - y}} V(y).

Check: the function G(x)=−eik∣x∣4π∣x∣G(x) = -\frac{e^{ik\abs{x}}}{4\pi \abs{x}} is the outgoing Green's function of the Helmholtz operator, (Δ+k2)G=δ0(\Delta + k^2) G = \delta_0. Since (Δ+k2)ei𝐤⋅x=0(\Delta + k^2) e^{i\mathbf{k} \cdot x} = 0, applying Δ+k2\Delta + k^2 to the right side gives VψV \psi, which is the Schrödinger equation (Δ+k2)ψ=Vψ(\Delta + k^2)\psi = V \psi. The choice of e+ik∣x−y∣e^{+ik\abs{x - y}} makes the scattered part ψ−ei𝐤⋅x\psi - e^{i \mathbf{k} \cdot x} an outgoing spherical wave at infinity.

Remarks

In operator form the equation reads ψ=ϕ+G0Vψ\psi = \phi + G_0 V \psi with ϕ\phi the incoming wave and G0G_0 the convolution with GG. Iterating it gives the Born series, and its first term beyond ϕ\phi is the Born approximation.
