Little q-Jacobi polynomials

Builds on Basic hypergeometric seriesq-Pochhammer symbol

Definition

Let 0<q<10 < q < 1, let a,ba, b be real numbers, and let n≥0n \ge 0 be an integer. Write (c;q)k(c; q)_k for the q-Pochhammer symbol. Assume aqj≠1aq^{j} \ne 1 for j=1,…,nj = 1, \ldots, n. The little qq-Jacobi polynomial of degree nn is pn(x;a,b∣q)=2ϕ1 ⁣(q−n,  abqn+1aq;q, qx)=∑k=0n(q−n;q)k (abqn+1;q)k(aq;q)k (q;q)k(qx)k,p_n(x; a, b \mid q) = {}_2\phi_1\!\left( \begin{matrix} q^{-n}, \; abq^{n+1} \\ aq \end{matrix} ; q, \, qx \right) = \sum_{k=0}^{n} \frac{(q^{-n}; q)_k \, (abq^{n+1}; q)_k}{(aq; q)_k \, (q; q)_k} (qx)^k, where 2ϕ1{}_2\phi_1 is the basic hypergeometric series. The series stops at k=nk = n, because (q−n;q)k=0(q^{-n}; q)_k = 0 for k>nk > n.

Remarks

Orthogonality: if 0<aq<10 < aq < 1 and bq<1bq < 1, then for m≠nm \ne n ∑k=0∞(bq;q)k(q;q)k(aq)k pm(qk) pn(qk)=0,\sum_{k=0}^{\infty} \frac{(bq; q)_k}{(q; q)_k} (aq)^k \, p_m(q^k) \, p_n(q^k) = 0, and the weights (bq;q)k(q;q)k(aq)k\frac{(bq; q)_k}{(q; q)_k} (aq)^k are positive.

Example: for n=1n = 1 the sum has two terms, and (1−q−1)q/(1−q)=−1(1 - q^{-1}) q / (1 - q) = -1 gives p1(x)=1−1−abq21−aq x.p_1(x) = 1 - \frac{1 - abq^2}{1 - aq} \, x. Check of orthogonality to p0=1p_0 = 1 when b=0b = 0: the weights are wk=(aq)k/(q;q)kw_k = (aq)^k / (q; q)_k, and the qq-binomial theorem gives ∑kwk=1/(aq;q)∞\sum_k w_k = 1/(aq; q)_\infty and ∑kwkqk=1/(aq2;q)∞\sum_k w_k q^k = 1/(aq^2; q)_\infty. So ∑kwkp1(qk)=1(aq;q)∞−1(1−aq)(aq2;q)∞=0\sum_k w_k p_1(q^k) = \frac{1}{(aq; q)_\infty} - \frac{1}{(1 - aq)(aq^2; q)_\infty} = 0, since (aq;q)∞=(1−aq)(aq2;q)∞(aq; q)_\infty = (1 - aq)(aq^2; q)_\infty.

Non-example: for b=0b = 0 the monomial xx is not the little qq-Jacobi polynomial of degree 11, since xx is not orthogonal to p0=1p_0 = 1 for these positive weights: ∑kwkqk>0\sum_k w_k q^k > 0.

Limit: lim⁡q→1pn(x;qα,qβ∣q)=Pn(α,β)(1−2x)/Pn(α,β)(1)\lim_{q \to 1} p_n(x; q^\alpha, q^\beta \mid q) = P_n^{(\alpha, \beta)}(1 - 2x) / P_n^{(\alpha, \beta)}(1), where Pn(α,β)P_n^{(\alpha,\beta)} is the Jacobi polynomial.
