Littlewood–Paley square function
Builds on Littlewood–Paley decompositionLp spaceFourier transform
Definition
Let , and let , and , , be as in the Littlewood–Paley decomposition on . Let be in the Lp space for some . The Littlewood–Paley square function of is the function given by
Remarks
The operator is not linear, but it is sublinear: , by the triangle inequality in . It depends on the choice of , but the norms of square functions built from two choices are comparable for .
Example: assume moreover that is radial and nonincreasing in , so that . For each at most two of the numbers are nonzero, and they sum to . So . By Plancherel's theorem for the Fourier transform, , hence for .
Non-example: the constant function is not in any with . As a tempered distribution its Fourier transform is the point mass at , and , so every vanishes and the formula gives although . This is why the comparison of and needs .
