Definition
Let be the exact solution of an initial value problem , , and let . Consider a one-step method with increment function . The local truncation error at step is the error of one step started from the exact value . The method is consistent of order if as , uniformly in , for every sufficiently smooth .
Remarks
For an implicit method or a linear multistep method , one inserts the exact solution in the same way: . Some books divide by and call the truncation error; then order means . Example: for the Euler method, , and Taylor's theorem gives , so the method is consistent of order . Non-example: is not consistent, since is not even . If is Lipschitz in with constant and for all , and if the method starts from , then the global error satisfies .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
