Definition

Let 𝒱\mathcal{V} be a variety of algebras. The variety 𝒱\mathcal{V} is locally finite if every finitely generated algebra in 𝒱\mathcal{V} is finite.

Remarks

An equivalent condition is that the free algebra F𝒱(n)F_{\mathcal{V}}(n) of 𝒱\mathcal{V} on nn generators is finite for every natural number nn. This holds because every algebra of 𝒱\mathcal{V} generated by nn elements is a homomorphic image of F𝒱(n)F_{\mathcal{V}}(n). Example: the variety of Boolean algebras is locally finite. A Boolean algebra generated by nn elements is an image of the free Boolean algebra on nn generators, which has 22n2^{2^n} elements. Non-example: the variety of groups is not locally finite. The group (ℤ,+)(\Z, +) is generated by the single element 11 and is infinite.
