Lommel function
Builds on Bessel function of the first kind
Definition
Let be such that neither nor is a negative odd integer, and let with the principal branch of powers. The Lommel function is
Remarks
The hypothesis on says exactly that no factor vanishes. The function is a particular solution of Check: the operator multiplies by , and shifts each term up by two powers. So the coefficients of must satisfy and , which the series does. Example: for and the first factor is , so starts with . In fact is , where is the Bessel function of the first kind. A non-example: for and one has , so the factor with is and is not defined by the series. The second Lommel function is obtained from by adding a suitable combination of and so that it has a simple asymptotic expansion at infinity.
