Lyapunov function for a difference equation
Builds on Equilibrium of a difference equationContinuous functionNeighbourhood
Definition
Let , let be continuous, and consider the difference equation . Let be an equilibrium, so . Let be a neighbourhood of relative to . A Lyapunov function for the equation on is a continuous function such that:
- .
- for every with .
- for every with .
The function is a strict Lyapunov function if moreover for every in with .
Remarks
Example: for on with , take . Then , for , and for , so is a strict Lyapunov function.
Non-example: for and , clauses 1 and 2 hold but for , so clause 3 fails.
The quantity is the forward difference of along solutions, the analogue of the derivative along solutions of a differential equation. If a Lyapunov function exists, the equilibrium is stable; if a strict one exists, it is asymptotically stable. For a linear map one often uses a quadratic form with positive definite and negative definite.
