Definition
Let be a random vector in with mean and covariance matrix , and assume that is positive definite. The Mahalanobis distance of a point from the distribution of is The Mahalanobis distance between two points with respect to is
Remarks
Example: let and . Then , so and , while . Non-example: if , then is not invertible, so the formula is not defined. If with invertible, then , the Euclidean distance after the change of variables . So is a metric on . If is the identity, is the Euclidean distance. If is multivariate normal, then has the chi-squared distribution with degrees of freedom.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
