Definition

Let aa and qq be real numbers. Mathieu's equation is the linear differential equation d2ydx2+(a−2qcos⁡2x) y=0.\frac{d^2 y}{dx^2} + (a - 2q \cos 2x)\, y = 0. Fix qq. The values of aa for which the equation has a nonzero even solution of period π\pi or 2π2\pi form an increasing sequence a0(q)<a1(q)<⋯a_0(q) < a_1(q) < \cdots. For each ar(q)a_r(q), such a solution is unique up to a constant factor. The even Mathieu function ce⁡r(x,q)\operatorname{ce}_r(x, q) is that solution for a=ar(q)a = a_r(q), normalised by ∫02πce⁡r(x,q)2 dx=π\int_0^{2\pi} \operatorname{ce}_r(x, q)^2\, dx = \pi. Its sign is fixed by continuity in qq from ce⁡0(x,0)=12\operatorname{ce}_0(x, 0) = \frac{1}{\sqrt 2} and ce⁡r(x,0)=cos⁡rx\operatorname{ce}_r(x, 0) = \cos rx for r≥1r \ge 1. In the same way, odd solutions of period π\pi or 2π2\pi exist for an increasing sequence b1(q)<b2(q)<⋯b_1(q) < b_2(q) < \cdots of values of aa. The odd Mathieu function se⁡r(x,q)\operatorname{se}_r(x, q) is the odd solution for a=br(q)a = b_r(q), with the same normalisation and with se⁡r(x,0)=sin⁡rx\operatorname{se}_r(x, 0) = \sin rx.

Remarks

The numbers ar(q)a_r(q) and br(q)b_r(q) are the characteristic values; they are eigenvalues of Sturm–Liouville problems on [0,π][0, \pi] or [0,π2][0, \frac{\pi}{2}] with suitable boundary conditions. The function ce⁡r\operatorname{ce}_r or se⁡r\operatorname{se}_r has period π\pi when rr is even and period 2π2\pi when rr is odd. Example: for q=0q = 0 one has ar(0)=r2a_r(0) = r^2 and ce⁡r(x,0)=cos⁡rx\operatorname{ce}_r(x, 0) = \cos rx for r≥1r \ge 1; indeed y=cos⁡rxy = \cos rx satisfies y′′+r2y=0y'' + r^2 y = 0 and ∫02πcos⁡2rx dx=π\int_0^{2\pi} \cos^2 rx\, dx = \pi. For r=0r = 0 the constant must be 12\frac{1}{\sqrt 2}, since ∫02π12 dx=π\int_0^{2\pi} \frac12\, dx = \pi. Non-example: for q=0q = 0 and a=14a = \frac14, the solution cos⁡x2\cos \frac{x}{2} has period 4π4\pi, not π\pi or 2π2\pi, so it is not a Mathieu function in this sense. For most other values of aa, Floquet theory gives a basis of solutions of the form eiμxp(x)e^{i\mu x} p(x) and e−iμxp(−x)e^{-i\mu x} p(-x), with pp of period π\pi and μ\mu the characteristic exponent.
