Definition
Let be a continuous function. Let range over the nonzero complex Radon measures on with compact support. The function is mean-periodic if the convolution of with some such vanishes:
Remarks
Give the topology of uniform convergence on compact sets. Its dual space is the space of compactly supported complex Radon measures. By the Hahn–Banach theorem, is mean-periodic if and only if the closed linear span of the translates , , is not all of . Some authors allow to be a compactly supported distribution instead of a measure.
Example: if is continuous with period , take . Then , so is mean-periodic. Similarly with satisfies .
Non-example: is not mean-periodic. Suppose with compactly supported, and let be the measure . Then , so vanishes for real . Since has compact support, is an entire function, so on . On the imaginary axis is the Fourier transform of , so and .
