Median algebra as a ternary algebra
Builds on Ternary operationDistributive latticeTotal orderTreeMajority term
Example
A median algebra is a set with one ternary operation , written , such that for all :
- ;
- ;
- ;
- .
So it is an algebra with a single operation of arity , defined by identities.
The basic instance is a distributive lattice with On a total order this is the middle one of the three elements. For instance on with the usual order, and . On it is the majority function, and on it is the majority taken in each coordinate. Laws 1 to 3 are clear for the majority function, and law 4 can be checked on by going through the cases.
Remarks
In a tree, the median of three vertices is the unique vertex that lies on all three paths between them, and this gives a median algebra on the vertex set. By laws 1 to 3, . So is a majority term for the variety of median algebras. The operation on is a non-example: it fails law 1, since it gives , which differs from when .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
