Definition
Let be a domain and let be a finite set of nodes. A meshfree method for a differential equation on approximates the solution by where the functions and the method satisfy two conditions:
- each is determined by the node set and fixed weight or kernel functions alone, with no elements or edges between nodes;
- the coefficients are found by a Galerkin condition, by collocation at points of , or by a particle evolution law.
Usually each has compact support, a ball of radius around .
Remarks
Common choices of are moving least squares shape functions and radial basis functions . Moving least squares shape functions of order reproduce polynomials of degree at most ; since they reproduce constants, they form a partition of unity. Essential boundary conditions need extra care, because these usually do not satisfy .
Example: Gaussian radial basis function collocation for uses with a shape parameter . These functions depend only on the nodes and on , which satisfies clause 1. The solve at interior nodes and the boundary condition at boundary nodes, which is clause 2.
Non-example: the hat functions of linear finite elements on a triangulation are not meshfree. Each hat function depends on which triangles contain its node, so clause 1 fails.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
