Definition
Let be an open subset of , or a smooth manifold, with cotangent bundle . Microlocal analysis studies distributions and linear operators on through properties localized at points . Here is a position and is a frequency direction. A property holds microlocally near if it holds after cutting off near and keeping only frequencies in a conic neighbourhood of . The basic notions are:
- The wave front set of a distribution : the set of near which fails to be smooth microlocally.
- Properly supported pseudo-differential operators, which act microlocally and satisfy .
Remarks
Example: let on , where is the Heaviside function. Then is smooth off the line , and . The check: take a cutoff near a point of the line. The Fourier transform of decays rapidly in every closed cone avoiding the -axis, but only like along it. Non-example: classical local regularity, such as " is smooth near ", is not a microlocal statement, since it does not distinguish frequency directions. The projection of to is the singular support: .
