Midpoint

Builds on Affine combination

Definition

Let KK be a field in which 2≠02 \neq 0, and let AA be an affine space over a vector space VV over KK. Let pp and qq be points of AA. The midpoint of pp and qq is the point midpoint⁡(p,q)=p+12(q−p).\operatorname{midpoint}(p, q) = p + \tfrac{1}{2}(q - p). It is the affine combination 12p+12q\frac{1}{2} p + \frac{1}{2} q.

Remarks

In ℝn\mathbb{R}^n, the midpoint of (p1,…,pn)(p_1, \dots, p_n) and (q1,…,qn)(q_1, \dots, q_n) is (p1+q12,…,pn+qn2)\left(\frac{p_1 + q_1}{2}, \dots, \frac{p_n + q_n}{2}\right). In a Euclidean space, the midpoint mm of pp and qq satisfies d(p,m)=d(m,q)=12d(p,q)d(p, m) = d(m, q) = \frac{1}{2} d(p, q). It is the only point with this property. The midpoint is symmetric: midpoint⁡(p,q)=midpoint⁡(q,p)\operatorname{midpoint}(p, q) = \operatorname{midpoint}(q, p). Also midpoint⁡(p,p)=p\operatorname{midpoint}(p, p) = p.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
