Definition

Let 𝒞\mathcal{C} be the set of continuous functions [0,∞)→ℂ[0, \infty) \to \C, with pointwise addition and the convolution on the half-line (f∗g)(t)=∫0tf(τ)g(t−τ) dτ(f * g)(t) = \int_0^t f(\tau) g(t - \tau) \, d\tau as multiplication. This is a commutative ring without unit and without zero divisors. The Mikusiński field of operators ℳ\mathcal{M} is its field of fractions:

  1. its elements are the classes f/gf/g of pairs (f,g)∈𝒞×(𝒞∖{0})(f, g) \in \mathcal{C} \times (\mathcal{C} \setminus \set{0}), where (f,g)(f, g) and (f1,g1)(f_1, g_1) are identified when f∗g1=f1∗gf * g_1 = f_1 * g;
  2. addition is f/g+f1/g1=(f∗g1+f1∗g)/(g∗g1)f/g + f_1/g_1 = (f * g_1 + f_1 * g)/(g * g_1);
  3. multiplication is (f/g)(f1/g1)=(f∗f1)/(g∗g1)(f/g)(f_1/g_1) = (f * f_1)/(g * g_1).

The elements of ℳ\mathcal{M} are called operators.

Remarks

The construction works without a unit in 𝒞\mathcal{C}. The identification is an equivalence relation because 𝒞\mathcal{C} has no zero divisors, and ℳ\mathcal{M} is a field with unit g/gg/g for any g≠0g \ne 0. Each f∈𝒞f \in \mathcal{C} is identified with (f∗g)/g(f * g)/g, which does not depend on gg, and this embeds 𝒞\mathcal{C} as a subring. Let l∈𝒞l \in \mathcal{C} be the constant function 11, so that l∗fl * f is the integral ∫0tf\int_0^t f. A complex number α\alpha is identified with (αl)/l(\alpha l)/l; then the product of α\alpha and ff in ℳ\mathcal{M} is the ordinary multiple αf\alpha f. The operator s=l/(l∗l)=1/ls = l/(l * l) = 1/l satisfies sf=f′+f(0)s f = f' + f(0) for every continuously differentiable ff, because l∗f′=f−f(0)ll * f' = f - f(0) l.

Example: the function tt equals l∗ll * l, so its image in ℳ\mathcal{M} is (l∗l∗l)/l(l * l * l)/l, and s⋅t=ll∗l⋅l∗l∗ll=l∗l∗l∗ll∗l∗l=ls \cdot t = \frac{l}{l * l} \cdot \frac{l * l * l}{l} = \frac{l * l * l * l}{l * l * l} = l. So st=ls t = l, the constant function 11, in line with sf=f′+f(0)s f = f' + f(0) for f(t)=tf(t) = t.

Non-example: the pair (l,0)(l, 0) does not define an element of ℳ\mathcal{M}, since clause 1 requires a nonzero denominator. Allowing the denominator 00 would make every pair (f,0)(f, 0) equivalent to every (f1,0)(f_1, 0), since f∗0=f1∗0=0f * 0 = f_1 * 0 = 0, and the division rules would fail.
