Definition
Let be the ring of convergent power series in variables. Let with . The Jacobian ideal of is the ideal of . The Milnor number of at is a non-negative integer or .
Remarks
The quotient is called the local algebra or Milnor algebra of . The number is finite if and only if has at most an isolated singularity at , and exactly when is not a critical point.
Example: with integers . Then , and the monomials with and form a basis of the quotient. So . For , is the maximal ideal and .
Non-example of a finite Milnor number: . Here , and the powers are linearly independent modulo , so . The singularity is not isolated: the gradient vanishes on the whole line .
Let . For an isolated singularity, is also the topological degree of the map from a small sphere about to the unit sphere. It is also the rank of the middle homology of the Milnor fibre.
