Minimal period

Builds on Periodic pointIterated function

Definition

Let XX be a set, let f ⁣:X→Xf \colon X \to X be a map, and let x∈Xx \in X be a periodic point of ff. The minimal period, or prime period, of xx is the least integer n≥1n \ge 1 such that fn(x)=xf^n(x) = x, where fnf^n is the nn-th iterate of ff.

Remarks

Let pp be the minimal period of xx. Then fm(x)=xf^m(x) = x holds exactly when pp divides mm: write m=qp+rm = qp + r with 0≤r<p0 \le r < p; then x=fm(x)=fr(x)x = f^m(x) = f^r(x), so r=0r = 0 by minimality. The points x,f(x),…,fp−1(x)x, f(x), \dots, f^{p-1}(x) are distinct, so the orbit of xx has exactly pp points. A point has minimal period 11 exactly when it is a fixed point.

Example: for f(x)=−xf(x) = -x on ℝ\R and x=1x = 1, one has f(1)=−1≠1f(1) = -1 \ne 1 and f2(1)=1f^2(1) = 1, so the minimal period is 22.

Non-example: for the same map, 22 is not the minimal period of 00. It is a period, since f2(0)=0f^2(0) = 0, but already f(0)=0f(0) = 0, so the minimal period of 00 is 11.

In Lean's Mathlib, Function.minimalPeriod f x is defined for all xx and takes the value 00 when xx is not periodic.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
