Minimax estimator
Definition
Let be a statistical model with a loss function, and let be the risk function of an estimator . The minimax risk of the problem is where the infimum is over all estimators. An estimator is minimax if
Remarks
A minimax estimator need not exist, and it need not be unique. A Bayes estimator whose risk function is constant in is minimax.
Example: let be binomial with parameters and , with squared error loss. Let . A direct computation of variance plus squared bias gives for every . This is the Bayes estimator for the beta prior with parameters and , and its risk is constant, so it is minimax.
Non-example: in the same problem. Its risk is , with maximum at . Since , its worst-case risk exceeds , so it is not minimax.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
