Convex and discrete geometry Definition
Minkowski addition
Builds on Vector space
Definition
Let be a real vector space and let . The Minkowski sum of and is the set For a real number , the dilate of is . The operation is Minkowski addition.
Remarks
Example: in , let and . A point with is , so is the unit square .
Minkowski addition is associative and commutative, with neutral element , and . If and are convex, then is convex; if they are compact, then is compact.
Non-example of a familiar rule: can fail. For one has but . For convex and one has . In terms of support functions, for nonempty compact convex . For polytopes, see the Minkowski sum of polytopes.
