Problem

Let n≥2n \ge 2, and let Sn−1S^{n-1} be the unit sphere of ℝn\R^n. Let ℋn−1\mathcal{H}^{n-1} be the (n−1)(n-1)-dimensional Hausdorff measure. Let K⊆ℝnK \subseteq \R^n be a convex body and ω⊆Sn−1\omega \subseteq S^{n-1} a Borel set. Let NK(ω)N_K(\omega) be the set of boundary points of KK with an outer unit normal in ω\omega. The surface area measure of KK is the Borel measure SK(ω)=ℋn−1(NK(ω))S_K(\omega) = \mathcal{H}^{n-1}(N_K(\omega)) on Sn−1S^{n-1}. Let μ\mu be a finite Borel measure on Sn−1S^{n-1}. Find a convex body KK with SK=μS_K = \mu, and decide when such a body exists and whether it is unique.

Remarks

The problem is solved. A convex body KK with SK=μS_K = \mu exists if and only if μ\mu is not concentrated on a great subsphere of Sn−1S^{n-1} and ∫Sn−1u dμ(u)=0\int_{S^{n-1}} u \, d\mu(u) = 0. The body is then unique up to translation. Minkowski solved the case of polytopes. Let u1,…,umu_1, \ldots, u_m be distinct unit vectors spanning ℝn\R^n, and let a1,…,am>0a_1, \ldots, a_m > 0 with ∑iaiui=0\sum_i a_i u_i = 0. Then there is a polytope, unique up to translation, whose facets have outer normals uiu_i and areas aia_i. The general case is due to Minkowski, Alexandrov, and Fenchel and Jessen. When μ\mu has a positive density ff, the problem asks for a body whose Gaussian curvature at the point with outer normal uu is 1/f(u)1 / f(u). This is a Monge–Ampère equation on the sphere. The regularity of its solutions was studied by Pogorelov and by Cheng and Yau. Example: the uniform measure μ=c σ\mu = c \, \sigma on Sn−1S^{n-1}, with σ\sigma the surface measure and c>0c > 0, is the surface area measure of a ball of radius c1/(n−1)c^{1/(n-1)}.
