Definition
A linear mixed model is a statistical model for a random vector of the form where:
- is a known real matrix and is an unknown vector of fixed effects;
- is a known real matrix and is a random vector of random effects with ;
- is a random error vector, independent of ;
- the covariance matrices and are positive definite and depend on unknown variance parameters.
Here is the multivariate normal distribution.
Remarks
The model implies . Without the term it is a general linear model with one response.
Example: the random intercept model. For groups and members , let with independent and . This fits the definition with , the column of ones, , the matrix of group indicators, and . Two members of the same group have covariance and correlation , the intraclass correlation.
Non-example: if the group shifts are treated as unknown constants rather than random variables, clause 2 fails. The model is then a fixed effects model, a general linear model with the group indicators among the columns of .
Given the variance parameters, is estimated by generalized least squares and is predicted by its best linear unbiased predictor. The variance parameters are usually estimated by restricted maximum likelihood.
