Definition
Let be a connected open set in . Consider a linear second-order partial differential equation in with real coefficients. Its type at each point is given by the classification of second-order PDEs. The equation is of mixed type in if both conditions hold:
- it is elliptic on some nonempty open subset of ;
- it is hyperbolic on some nonempty open subset of .
Remarks
Example: the Tricomi equation on , written as , has , and , so . It is elliptic on the open set and hyperbolic on the open set , so it is of mixed type. Non-example: the equation has everywhere, so it is elliptic on all of and not of mixed type. If the coefficients are continuous, the elliptic and hyperbolic regions are open, and in a connected they are separated by a closed set where the coefficient matrix is degenerate.
