Definition
Let be an integer and let be a parametric family of probability densities on . A finite mixture model with components is the statistical model of the densities where and the mixing weights satisfy and . The densities are the components.
Remarks
Equivalently, let be a random label with , and let have density given . Then has density , so a mixture model is a latent variable model with hidden label . Example: , where is the standard normal density, is a two-component Gaussian mixture with . Non-example: has weights adding up to , so it is not a mixture and not even a probability density. The parameters are identifiable at best up to a permutation of the components, since relabelling the components does not change . The same definition with discrete distributions replacing densities gives mixtures of discrete distributions.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
