Modality of a singularity
Definition
Let be a germ of a holomorphic function with an isolated critical point at . Let be so large that is -determined. Let be the space of -jets at of germs vanishing at . The group of -jets of germs of biholomorphic maps acts on by composition on the right. The modality of is the least integer with this property. Some neighbourhood of in is covered by finitely many families of orbits, each depending on at most parameters. A germ of modality is called simple, of modality unimodal, and of modality bimodal.
Remarks
Informally, a family of orbits depending on parameters is the union of the orbits of the points of an -dimensional smooth submanifold of . The modality does not depend on the choice of , as long as is -determined. Example: on is simple. Any small perturbation of the jet of in is with . If it is right equivalent to , a regular point. If it is right equivalent to , a Morse point. If it is right equivalent to . Non-example: on is not simple. For the germs with , the zero set is four distinct lines through . Their cross-ratio, taken up to the order of the lines, depends on and is invariant under right equivalence. So infinitely many orbits meet every neighbourhood of , and in fact the modality of is .
