Definition
Let and be reduced complex spaces. A holomorphic map is a modification if:
- is proper and surjective;
- there is a nowhere dense analytic subset such that is nowhere dense in ;
- restricts to a biholomorphic map .
Remarks
Example: the blow-up of at the origin is a modification with . It is proper and surjective, is a projective line, which is nowhere dense in the -dimensional manifold , and is biholomorphic off it.
Non-example: let be the disjoint union of and a point , and let be the identity on and send to . Then is proper and surjective, and with clause 3 holds. But contains the isolated point , so it is not nowhere dense and clause 2 fails. No other choice of helps, since is not injective over , so must lie over .
The set is the exceptional set. Some authors call these maps proper modifications.
