Definition
Let be a finite group and let be a field whose characteristic is a prime that divides . A modular representation of over is a representation on a finite-dimensional vector space over . Equivalently, it is a finitely generated module over the group algebra . Modular representation theory is the study of these representations and modules.
Remarks
Example: with generator , , and . This is a representation because in characteristic . The line is invariant, but any other line is sent to , a different line, so is not a direct sum of invariant lines. Non-example: representations of over , or over a finite field whose characteristic does not divide , are ordinary representations; there Maschke's theorem makes every representation semisimple. Let be a splitting field for . Brauer showed that the number of simple -modules is the number of conjugacy classes of elements of of order prime to .
