Definition
Let . A mollifier on is a function such that:
- is a bump function, that is, smooth with compact support;
- the support of lies in the closed unit ball ;
- for all ;
- .
For the rescaled function is .
Remarks
Each is again smooth and nonnegative, has integral by the change of variables , and has support in the ball of radius . Some authors drop the sign condition 3 or replace condition 2 by compact support anywhere; the approximation properties remain.
Example: the standard mollifier is with chosen so that the integral is . It is positive inside the ball and vanishes outside, so conditions 2 and 3 hold. It is smooth because for , extended by for , is smooth, and with .
Non-example: the Gaussian is smooth, positive and has integral . Its support is all of , so it fails condition 1 and condition 2. It still gives an approximate identity, but convolution with it does not preserve compact support.

- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
