Monadic functor

Definition

Let U ⁣:𝒟→𝒞U \colon \mathcal{D} \to \mathcal{C} be a functor with a left adjoint FF and counit ε ⁣:FU⇒Id𝒟\varepsilon \colon F U \Rightarrow \mathrm{Id}_{\mathcal{D}}. Let T=UFT = U F be the monad of the adjunction, and let 𝒞T\mathcal{C}^T be its Eilenberg–Moore category. The comparison functor K ⁣:𝒟→𝒞TK \colon \mathcal{D} \to \mathcal{C}^T sends an object dd to the algebra (U(d),U(εd))(U(d), U(\varepsilon_d)) and a morphism ff to U(f)U(f). The functor UU is monadic if KK is an equivalence of categories.

Remarks

A functor without a left adjoint is never monadic. Some authors call UU strictly monadic when KK is an isomorphism of categories. The comparison functor always satisfies UT∘K=UU^T \circ K = U, where UTU^T is the forgetful functor of 𝒞T\mathcal{C}^T.

Example: the forgetful functor from groups to sets is monadic. Its left adjoint is the free group functor. An algebra of the monad TT is a set AA with a map from the free group on AA to AA satisfying the algebra laws. Such a map comes from a unique group structure on AA, and algebra morphisms are group homomorphisms, so KK is an isomorphism.

Non-example: the forgetful functor UU from topological spaces to sets has the discrete space functor as left adjoint. The monad UFU F is the identity monad, whose algebras are just sets, so 𝒞T\mathcal{C}^T is the category of sets. The comparison functor sends a space to its underlying set, and it is not full, since not every function between spaces is continuous. So KK is not an equivalence and UU is not monadic.
