Definition

Let MM be a C∞C^\infty Hilbert manifold with a complete Riemannian metric gg, and let f ⁣:M→ℝf \colon M \to \R be a C2C^2 function. The gradient ∇f\nabla f is defined by g(∇f,v)=df(v)g(\nabla f, v) = df(v). The function ff satisfies condition (C) if every sequence (pn)(p_n) in MM on which ff is bounded and ∥∇f(pn)∥→0\norm{\nabla f(p_n)} \to 0 has a convergent subsequence. This is the Palais–Smale condition on MM. Through gg, the Hessian of ff at a critical point pp is a bounded self-adjoint operator on TpMT_p M. The point pp is nondegenerate if this operator is invertible. Its index is the supremum of the dimensions of subspaces of TpMT_p M on which the Hessian is negative definite.

Morse theory on Hilbert manifolds is the critical point theory of C2C^2 functions ff on such MM with three properties. The function is bounded below, it satisfies condition (C), and its critical points are nondegenerate of finite index.

Remarks

For such ff the two basic theorems of Morse theory hold. If a<ba < b and f−1[a,b]f^{-1}[a, b] contains no critical point, then the sublevel set Ma={f≤a}M^a = \set{f \le a} is a deformation retract of MbM^b. If f−1[a,b]f^{-1}[a, b] contains exactly one critical point, of index λ\lambda, in its interior, then MbM^b has the homotopy type of MaM^a with a λ\lambda-cell attached.

Example: let (N,h)(N, h) be a compact Riemannian manifold, let p,q∈Np, q \in N, and let MM be the Hilbert manifold of paths ω ⁣:[0,1]→N\omega \colon [0, 1] \to N of Sobolev class H1H^1 with ω(0)=p\omega(0) = p and ω(1)=q\omega(1) = q. The energy E(ω)=12∫01∣ω′∣2 dtE(\omega) = \frac{1}{2} \int_0^1 \abs{\omega'}^2 \, dt is bounded below and satisfies condition (C). Its critical points are the geodesics from pp to qq, of finite index, and they are nondegenerate when qq is not conjugate to pp along any geodesic.

Non-example: on M=ℝM = \R the function f(x)=arctan⁡xf(x) = \arctan x is bounded below and has no critical points, but condition (C) fails along xn=−nx_n = -n, since f(xn)f(x_n) is bounded and f′(xn)→0f'(x_n) \to 0. Accordingly ff does not attain its infimum −π/2-\pi/2, while a function that is bounded below and satisfies condition (C) attains its infimum at a critical point.
