Problem
Call a region in the plane a worm cover if it has the following property. For every plane curve of length , some isometry of the plane satisfies . Find the smallest possible area of a worm cover.
Remarks
The problem is open; most work concerns convex worm covers. A disc of radius is such a region, so the answer is at most . Indeed, let be the point of at arc length from an end. Every point of is joined to by an arc of length at most , so it lies within distance of . Much smaller convex worm covers are known.
