Definition
Let , let , and let be a normed space of real functions on , such as for compact or . Let be subsets of , called approximating families, usually finite-dimensional subspaces or sets described by parameters. Multivariate approximation is the approximation of functions of the variables by elements of the families . Its quality is measured by the error of best approximation The subject studies how depends on , on and on the smoothness of .
Remarks
Example: , , and the polynomials in several variables of total degree at most , a space of dimension . By the Stone–Weierstrass theorem, for every continuous .
Non-example: for the same question is univariate approximation, the classical case covered by the Weierstrass approximation theorem.
A typical rate for a fixed dimension: if has bounded derivatives of order and has dimension , the best linear methods give errors of order . This rate degrades as grows.
