Mumford–Shah functional

Builds on Hausdorff measureClosed setLp space

Example

Let Ω⊆ℝ2\Omega \subseteq \R^2 be a bounded open set, the image domain. Let g∈L∞(Ω)g \in L^\infty(\Omega) be a grey-level image, and let α,β>0\alpha, \beta > 0 be parameters. For a relatively closed set K⊆ΩK \subseteq \Omega and a function u∈C1(Ω∖K)u \in C^1(\Omega \setminus K), the Mumford–Shah functional is E(u,K)=∫Ω∖K∣∇u∣2 dx+α∫Ω∖K(u−g)2 dx+β ℋ1(K).E(u, K) = \int_{\Omega \setminus K} \abs{\nabla u}^2 \, dx + \alpha \int_{\Omega \setminus K} (u - g)^2 \, dx + \beta \, \mathcal{H}^1(K). Here ℋ1\mathcal{H}^1 is the one-dimensional Hausdorff measure, the length of KK. A minimizing pair (u,K)(u, K) gives a smoothed image uu and a set of edges KK.

Check on a simple image: let DD be a closed disc of radius rr in Ω\Omega, and let g=𝟏Dg = \mathbf{1}_D. The pair u=gu = g, K=∂DK = \partial D has no gradient term and no fidelity term, so E(u,K)=2πβrE(u, K) = 2 \pi \beta r. The pair u=0u = 0, K=∅K = \emptyset has energy απr2\alpha \pi r^2. So for α>2β/r\alpha > 2\beta/r the first pair is cheaper than the second, and for α<2β/r\alpha < 2\beta/r the second is cheaper. Large weights on fidelity favour keeping the edge, and small weights favour erasing it.

Remarks

The functional was proposed by David Mumford and Jayant Shah for image segmentation. It is a free discontinuity problem: the unknown set KK is where uu may jump. Ennio De Giorgi, Michele Carriero and Antonio Leaci proved the existence of minimizers. Their method first solves a weak form, where uu is a special function of bounded variation and KK is its jump set. Luigi Ambrosio and Vincenzo Maria Tortorelli approximated it, in the sense of Γ-convergence, by elliptic functionals of two smooth functions, which is the basis of many numerical methods.
