Definition
Let be a function and consider the conservation law . Take a uniform grid of cells of width , and let be the cell averages of a finite volume method. Let be a numerical flux, for example one given by a Riemann solver, with for all . Let be a flux limiter with for . A MUSCL scheme is the semi-discrete scheme built in three steps.
- Slope ratio: , with read as when .
- Limited reconstruction at each interface:
- Flux update:
The system of ordinary differential equations is then advanced in time, for example by a Runge–Kutta method.
Remarks
Example: take the minmod limiter . For linear data one gets and , so , the exact interface value. For step data and one gets , so and no overshoot appears.
Non-example: the choice fails the condition for . It gives unlimited central slopes, and the resulting scheme creates oscillations near discontinuities.
With the reconstruction is constant and the scheme reduces to a first-order scheme of Godunov type.
