Definition

Let XX be a complex manifold of dimension nn and let E→XE \to X be a holomorphic vector bundle of rank rr with a Hermitian metric hh. At a point xx, write the curvature Θ\Theta of the Chern connection in local coordinates and a frame orthonormal at xx as iΘ(x)=i∑j,k=1n∑λ,μ=1rcjkλμ dzj∧dzˉk⊗eλ∗⊗eμ.i \Theta(x) = i \sum_{j,k=1}^{n} \sum_{\lambda,\mu=1}^{r} c_{jk\lambda\mu}\, dz_j \wedge d\bar z_k \otimes e_\lambda^* \otimes e_\mu. The bundle (E,h)(E, h) is Nakano positive if at every point x∈Xx \in X ∑j,k,λ,μcjkλμ τjλτˉkμ>0\sum_{j,k,\lambda,\mu} c_{jk\lambda\mu}\, \tau_{j\lambda} \bar\tau_{k\mu} > 0 for every nonzero complex n×rn \times r matrix τ=(τjλ)\tau = (\tau_{j\lambda}). Such a matrix is the same as a tensor τ∈TxX⊗Ex\tau \in T_x X \otimes E_x.

Remarks

Taking τjλ=ξjvλ\tau_{j\lambda} = \xi_j v_\lambda recovers the condition of Griffiths positivity, so Nakano positive bundles are Griffiths positive. For r=1r = 1 or n=1n = 1 every tensor τ\tau is of this form, and the two notions agree.

Example: E=L⊕rE = L^{\oplus r}, where LL is a positive line bundle with curvature i∑ajkdzj∧dzˉki \sum a_{jk} dz_j \wedge d\bar z_k, with the direct sum metric. Then cjkλμ=ajkδλμc_{jk\lambda\mu} = a_{jk} \delta_{\lambda\mu}, and the sum is ∑λ∑j,kajkτjλτˉkλ\sum_\lambda \sum_{j,k} a_{jk} \tau_{j\lambda} \bar\tau_{k\lambda}. Each inner sum is ≥0\ge 0 because (ajk)(a_{jk}) is positive definite, and some inner sum is >0> 0 because τ≠0\tau \ne 0.

Non-example: a trivial bundle X×ℂrX \times \C^r with the standard metric has Θ=0\Theta = 0, so the sum is 00 for every τ\tau.

Nakano's vanishing theorem: if XX is compact Kähler and EE is Nakano positive, then Hq(X,KX⊗E)=0H^q(X, K_X \otimes E) = 0 for q≥1q \ge 1, where KXK_X is the canonical bundle.
