Definition
Let be a scheme that is proper over a field , and let be an invertible sheaf on . For a closed integral curve , proper over , let be the degree of the restriction of to , also written . The sheaf is nef if for every closed integral curve .
Remarks
A Cartier divisor is nef when is nef, that is, for all curves .
Example: every ample is nef. Some power is very ample, so is the degree of in a projective embedding, which is positive. The trivial bundle is nef, with degree on every curve, and it is not ample when and is projective.
Non-example: on , is not nef, since its degree on the curve itself is .
On a projective scheme, Kleiman's criterion says that is nef if and only if for every closed subvariety . It also says that the nef cone is the closure of the ample cone.
