Nelson–Aalen estimator
Builds on Hazard functionCensoringEstimator
Definition
Let be right-censored observations of a lifetime, with for an event and for a censored time. Let be the distinct event times, the number of events at , and the number at risk just before . The Nelson–Aalen estimator of the cumulative hazard function is with the empty sum equal to .
Remarks
In counting process notation, with the number of observed events up to and the number at risk at , the estimator is , with . A common variance estimator is . The survival estimate is at least the Kaplan–Meier estimate, since for all .
Example: for the observations , with censored, is at , at and at . So on , on , on and from on.
Non-example: the cumulative sum , which divides by the initial sample size , is not the Nelson–Aalen estimator. It ignores that subjects leave the risk set, and it underestimates the cumulative hazard.
