Nerve of a category
Definition
Let be a small category, and let be the simplex category. View each object of as the category with objects and exactly one morphism when . The nerve of is the simplicial set with where an order-preserving map acts by precomposition, sending to .
Remarks
A functor is the same as a string of composable morphisms. So is the set of objects and the set of morphisms. The face map for composes , while drops and drops ; the degeneracy inserts an identity at . Example: if has one object and only the identity morphism, then has one element for each , and is the point . Non-example: the boundary consists of three edges forming a triangle, with no 2-simplex. It is not the nerve of any category, because in a nerve each pair of composable edges is filled by a 2-simplex. A simplicial set is isomorphic to a nerve exactly when every inner horn with has a unique filler.
