Neville's algorithm
Builds on Polynomial interpolationField
Definition
Let be a field, let , let be pairwise distinct, let , and let . Neville's algorithm computes the numbers for by the recursion
- for ;
- for ,
in order of increasing , and returns .
Remarks
By induction on , the number is the value at of the interpolation polynomial of degree at most through . Indeed, the same recursion with as a variable gives a polynomial of degree at most . At it gives , and at it gives . At an inner node both terms give . So the output is the value at of the interpolation polynomial of all the data.
Example: data , , and . Then , and . This agrees with the interpolation polynomial at .
Non-example: if two nodes coincide, with , the recursion divides by , so the algorithm is not defined.
