Newton polynomial
Definition
Let be a field, let , and let be pairwise distinct. Let be a function defined at these points with values in . The Newton polynomial of at is where are the divided differences of and the empty product for is .
Remarks
has degree at most and for all , so it is the interpolation polynomial of the data, written in the Newton basis. The first terms form the interpolation polynomial at . It can be evaluated with nested multiplication, as in Horner's method.
Example: for , , , the divided differences are , , and . So , and indeed , , .
Non-example: has the Newton shape but its last coefficient is not ; its value at is .
For equally spaced nodes , the divided differences become forward differences divided by , which gives the Newton–Gregory forward formula.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
