Non-uniform rational B-spline
Definition
Let be an order, let be a knot vector with , and let be the B-splines of order for these knots. Let be control points and let be weights. The NURBS curve with these data is the map , A NURBS surface is defined in the same way with tensor products , control points and positive weights .
Remarks
The denominator is positive on , because the B-splines are nonnegative and do not all vanish there; so is a convex combination of the control points. At , where the right-continuous B-splines may all vanish, is defined by its limit from the left, as usual. In homogeneous coordinates, is the central projection of the polynomial B-spline curve with control points in . If all weights are equal, is the ordinary B-spline curve . Example: take , knots , points , , and weights , , . Then is a rational quadratic Bézier curve, and . In fact traces the quarter of the unit circle in the first quadrant. Non-example: the same data with weight fail the positivity clause, and then the denominator vanishes at , so is not defined on all of .
